The following is an excerpt from the "2001 California Child Care Portfolio":

."California's burgeoning population and the high cost of living in the state have put pressure on the child care system. As housing costs soar, fewer parents can afford to stay home with small children, yet there is only about one slot in a licensed child care setting for every five children with working parents. This lack of licensed care limits parents' options, leaving some to choose care based on cost, accessibility, or schedules that match parents' work hours rather than quality."

"Research shows that quality care promotes language and conceptual skills, fosters healthy relationships with peers and adults, and helps prepare children for school. Supporting quality care is an investment that pays off in terms of higher educational achievement and the ability of children to grow into adults who can compete in our state's increasingly technology - and information - dependent economy. Yet, in most parts of the state, such care is scarce and what's available is expensive."

What an opportune time for the child care field:  Child care is in demand and beginning to be seen as crucial for nurturing the minds and spirits of children!  As child care providers you are part of this existing child care work force, you are pioneers carving the future of the industry.

The Calaveras Child Care Council recognizes all the hard work that you do as a child care provider and they also understand that child care workers work long hours and are in the lowest paid profession in the United States.  The council is dedicated to developing partnerships that will work together to train existing and new providers, advocate for better wages for providers, and seek creative solutions within our county to help child care providers provide the high quality of care every child deserves.

One way that you can help meet the demands of the child care field is to have the knowledge of programs and trainings that you might benefit from.  This page will be for those interested in knowing what opportunities exist in and around the geographic area of Calaveras county.
